Significance to peoples' lives.
The 9/11 attacks had a significant impact on peoples' lives in not only America; but the whole world. The most obvious impact caused by the attacks, was the amount of people who lost their lives. Nearly 3000 people died in relation to the 9/11 terrorist attacks, also with many injured. In February 2005, 2,749 people had death certificates created relating to the 9/11 attacks, and an additional 13 people died proceeding the disaster; due to injury relations of the attacks. Out of the 2,749 people who died; 2,117 (77%) were males, and 632 (23%) were females; with everyone being from 83 different countries. Among those who were killed in the attacks were 23 New York City Police Officers, 55 Military Personnel (killed at the Pentagon attack), and 343 fire-fighters. Also at least 200 people either fell or jumped to their death, from the Twin Towers.
Not only was death a major traumatic situation, but also a lot of injuries occurred due to the attacks. Thousands of people were injured and not only was physical injury a factor, but also emotional/mental injury was a factor too. According to the New York State Office of Mental Health, 7 in 10 Americans believed they have experienced some type of depression, and 33,000 people have had symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD); due to the attacks. Also due to many adults and parents having these illnesses, their children had developed problems due to the event as well. Many adolescents developed these illnesses of PSTD and depression too, usually from seeing the visual direct exposure to the disaster (such as the planes hitting the towers). Many counselling and support groups helped the children talk and discuss their problems and loss.
Peoples' lives themselves weren't the only impact caused by the attacks, but also structural damage was a huge impact too. Fifteen million square feet of office space was ruined at the World Trade Centre, and it took 1.5 million working hours - during 261 days, were spent clearing and removing the debris from the WTC area. The obvious buildings that were destroyed instantly were the Twin Towers (North and South Towers), the Pentagon, and the four hijacked Boeing 757's. These buildings and planes weren't the only things destroyed; many buildings in the WTC area were too. The WTC buildings' three through to seven were either damaged or destroyed. These included; the Marriott Hotel (WTC 3) - completely destroyed, WTC 4, WTC 5, the U.S. Customs House (WTC 6), and WTC 7 - completely destroyed as well. Also pedestrian bridges connecting the buildings were severely damaged as well. The Deutsche Bank Building, two buildings of the World Financial Center, Borough of Manhattan Community College Filterman hall, 90 West street, and Verizon building were also damaged. All of this took a lot of effort and work to clean up for everyone involved.
The attacks also had a major impact on the economy and global markets. Many people lost their jobs and income - 130,000 employees lost their jobs from the attacks. Also was the cost of removing the debris - 11 billion USD, rebuilding the buildings, the cost of funerals, and the cost from airports being at a standstill for days from the attacks. About $2.8 billion dollars in wages were lost for three months after the attacks. These 9/11 attacks have lead to war in Afghanistan, hurting the economy with a total of three billion dollars a day as well.
The 9/11 attacks may have been a huge negative impact on America but many positives impacts became an outcome as America came together as one. This event created kindness and caring behavior in all local communities affected by the disaster. America's Blood Centers collected 251,370 units of blood (nearly three times the normal amount), which was donated within four days of the attacks (from the 11th until the 15th of September). Many men also decided to join the army in order to protect their country. Many memorials and services took place within days immediately after the attacks. There have been some main memorials set up which you are able to visit; the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the Flight 93 National Memorial, and the Pentagon Memorial.
Lastly, an impact that has affected the whole world would be the change in airport security.
