Official Story of the 911 attacks
The 11th of September will always be a day to remember, for not only America; but the whole world. On this day in the year 2001, four airlines were hijacked by members of the Islamic extremist group; al-Qaeda. These extremists were on a suicide mission to attack main targets in the United States of America. Three out of the four hijacked airlines succeeded in their missions. Two of the planes were crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre, (WTC), in New York; the third plane was flown into the Pentagon (United States of America, Military Base), near Washington D.C.; and the fourth plane was luckily enough to be taken into control by the passengers on board the plane, and crashed in a paddock in Pennsylvania. The civilians that had boarded the airlines, had no idea what was in for them; and the whole occurrence was taken by surprise. This event stunned the whole world and is now commonly known as 9/11.
The first of the hijacking attacks was on the American Airline flight 11, on a Boeing 767. The plane had a total amount of 90 people aboard - including nine airline staff and eighty-one passengers; this also includes the five terrorists. According to the Commission Report, flight 11 took off from Boston at 7:59am; with all passengers expecting to be travelling to Los Angeles. There are statements which is believed that the hijacking started at 8:14am by five members of the terrorist group al-Qaeda - (Satam M.A Al Suqami, Waleed M. Alshehri, Wail M. Alshehri, Mohamed Atta, and Abdulaziz Almoari). There were reports being given throughout the encounter of the attack; back to the American Airlines South-eastern Reservations. At the beginning, two defenseless flight attendants, (who were preparing for cabin service), were stabbed by two of the terrorists - that were seated in row 2 in first class. It was believed that they were stabbed to give-in to giving the terrorists the keys to the cockpit. The five hijackers rapidly gained control by spraying mace and pepper spray in the first-class cabin, and also claiming they had a bomb; to oblige all passengers and flight staff to head towards the rear end of the plane. At 8:26, the plane was reported that it was flying erratically and a minute later the plane changed direction and turned south. All reports were being made from that point onwards to the American Airlines South-eastern Reservations Office in North Carolina. At 8:38 the plane had been known to be flying unpredictably again and started to descend at a rapid pace. At 8:44, comments were being made that the plane was flying significantly low, and then the phone call cut out. At 8:46, American flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center; in New York City. Everyone on board the flight was killed instantly, along with everybody who was between floors 94 and 98 in the WTC North Tower.
The second hijacking attack was on the United Airlines flight 175 on a Boeing 757 as well. The plane has a total of 63 people aboard - including seven airline staff and fifty-six passengers. The plane was believed to be hijacked by another five members of the terrorist group al-Qaeda - (Marwan Al-Shehhi, Fayez Rashid Ahmed Hassen Al Qadi Banihammad, Ahmed Alghamdi, Hamza Alghamdi and Mohand Alshehri). According to the commission report, flight 175 departed at 8:14 - the same time the hijacking started in flight 11. It has been stated that the hijackers attacked somewhere between 8:42 and 8:46. They used knives, mace, and threat of bombs on passengers aboard the plane. They stabbed members of the flight staff and both of the pilots had been killed. Given the resemblance between both flight 11 and flight 175, there is conviction that similar tactics have been used for both attacks. At 8:58, the flight started to head towards New York City. Then at 9:03, United Airlines Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the WTC. Once again everybody who was on the flight was killed immediately, also everyone between floors 78 and 84 in the WTC South Tower.
The destruction of both of the towers, took its toll on New York and America. The collapse of the towers caused a massive shock wave to the ground, and 40,000L of jet fuel ignited in each tower. There were many people that jumped to their death from being trapped by fire and smoke in the upper floors - especially in the North Tower, (there is called to be at least 200 people who did). From the crash's, smoke and gray-white clouds filled the streets of New York. The North Tower stood for 102 minutes after the impact caused by flight 11, and the South Tower stood for a total of 56 minutes after the impact caused by flight 175.
The third hijacking was on the American Airlines flight 77; on another Boeing 757. There was a total of 62 people aboard the plane - four airline staff and fifty-eight passengers. According to the commission plan, this flight was believed to be hijacked by another five terrorists members from the al-Qaeda group - (Khalid Almihdhar, Majed Moqed, Salem Alhazmi, Hani Hanjous and Nawaf Alhazmi). At 8:20, flight 77 departed from Washington and was scheduled for Los Angeles. The hijacking began somewhere between 8:51 and 8:54. As similar to the other two flights - 11 and 175 - the terrorists used knives and moved all of the passengers aboard, to the back end of the plane. But unlike the other flights though, the terrorists on flight 77 used box cutters as well. At 8:54 the plane dispatched from its' original course and turned to head south. Then at 9:37, flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon. Everyone aboard the plane and any military personnel inside the building were killed instantly.
The last hijacking was on the United Airlines flight 93; on a Boeing 757. There was a total of 42 people aboard this plane - five airline staff and thirty-seven passengers; including the four hijackers, (Saeed Alghamdi, Ahmed Ibrahim A. Al Haznawi, Ahmed Alnami and Ziad Samir Jarrah). Flight 93 departed at 8:42 from New Jersey, heading for San Francisco. The hijackers attacked at 9:28. The difference between this attack and the other three that had happened, was that the others took over the cockpit within 30minutes of take off and there were five hijackers. Whereas with this flight 93, the cockpit didn't get taken over until 46minutes after takeoff and there were only four hijackers aboard. The hijackers aboard had knives, and claimed they had a bomb, and they also forced passengers to go to the back end of the plane. There were reports being made by phone call that a passenger had been stabbed and that two people were on the floor, either dead or injured. At 9:57 the passengers began to attack the hijackers back. The hijackers reacted by swinging the plane from side to side and then up and down to disorder the passengers. Auspiciously the passengers plan was accomplished and the hijackers decided to change their plans and just bring the plan down. At 10:02 the plane plummeted into an empty filed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It was said that their aim was to crash all the airlines into remarkable significant places in America; of which flight 93 was heading for the Capitol or the White House. Thankfully those aboard flight 93, saved many peoples' lives.
The 911 attacks resulted in approximately 3000 guiltless people to die. Throughout all of these attacks, many victims on board the planes' were contacting their family and friends informing them about what was going on and what was about to happen. This event had a huge impact on the United States of America and the whole world. It caused terror amongst everyone and the world was like it was on pause. Media coverage of the event occurred from the minute the first plane crashed into the North Tower; and continued for many days after. This event basically astonished the world.
After the 911 attacks, the hijackers were identified and then linked back to the terrorist group al-Qaeda and the groups' leader Osama Bin Laden. It is believed that he was responsible for the attacks and this lead to the war between Afghanistan and America - with their plan to attack the Taliban. Then later on the 2nd of May 2011, US troops killed the leader Osama Bin Laden.
